Because of blemish: 3 tons of vegetable Planted meat must be saved from waste

Zurich, May 4, 2023 - Due to a small error in the production process, three tons of products from the Swiss foodtech startup Planted cannot be sold regularly. Planted is therefore conducting a rescue campaign together with Too Good To Go on May 13. Via app, users:inside can secure 2kg packs for the price of 11.90 francs and pick them up directly at Planted's production facility in Kemptthal (ZH).

During the production of the popular vegetable Planted meat there has been a production error, which is why now three tons of products have discoloration. However, in terms of taste and quality, the products from the misproduction do not differ from the products sold normally. "Since we cannot put the product on regular sale because of the blemish, we are organizing a big rescue operation together with Too Good To Go," says Pascal Bieri, co-founder of Planted. With this campaign, the company wants to counteract food waste and at the same time give consumers an unusual treat.

This is not the first rescue operation by the two companies. Back in 2021, around three tons of planted.chicken were successfully saved from being wasted. "We were already overwhelmed by the great demand back then and are therefore happy to organize the campaign again," says Pascal Bieri.

planted.pulled Nature, planted.chicken Lemon & Herb and planted.kebab Original are on sale in 2kg packs at a price of CHF 11.90 instead of CHF 77 (price per kilo in the retail trade). One package is enough for about 20 servings and is particularly suitable as a filling for wraps, in crispy tacos or for delicious sauce dishes.

With this campaign, Planted is setting an example against food waste. And: Eating plant-based instead of animal meat saves animal lives and does good for the environment. Because the production of Planted plant-based meat saves up to 87% greenhouse gas emissions and 90% water compared to their animal counterparts.

The topic of food waste is more topical than ever

More than a third of all food produced is wasted. This is a major contributor to the climate crisis: According to the FAO, food waste is responsible for more than 10% of global greenhouse gases. This is because numerous resources are consumed on the way from the field to the plate - for example for transport, processing or cooling. To ensure that food does not end up in the trash, Too Good To Go cooperates with over 6200 partner companies and offers surplus food as surprise packages on the app of the same name. Too Good To Go thus reaches over 2 million registered users. Since the launch of Too Good To Go Switzerland, over 7 million meals have been saved.
