2025 Sustainability & Impact Report: Why Better Proteins Are More Important Than Ever

3 minutes reading time

World Environment Day reminds us that some of the most effective measures for combating climate change take place right on our plates.

At Planted, we develop proteins that taste great while using significantly fewer resources than conventional meat. That’s why we’re excited to release our 2025 Sustainability & Impact Report, which offers a glimpse into the progress we’ve made and the impact we’ve created together with our customers, partners, and team.

A year full of milestones

2025 was a landmark year for Planted.

We have opened our new production facility in Memmingen—Europe’s most advanced plant for biostructured proteins. Sustainability has been a top priority from the very beginning: The facility uses groundwater cooling, district heating, and solar power, while significantly expanding our production capacity.

We have also launched our new planted.steak. Developed using our fermentation platform and made from just a few natural ingredients, it offers a delicious culinary experience while generating 96.7% fewer CO₂ emissions than conventional beef.

These milestones show that sustainability and enjoyment are not mutually exclusive—they complement each other.

The Impact of Millions of Small Decisions

Behind every serving of Planted lies a simple decision: choosing a protein with a smaller environmental footprint.

In 2025 alone, Planted products helped avoid over 40,000 tons of CO₂ emissions, save 2.34 billion liters of water, and spare more than 1.2 million animals. Since our founding, this has resulted in nearly 95,000 tons of avoided CO₂ emissions, over 7 billion liters of water saved, and 4.7 million animals spared.

And perhaps most importantly: people are actually eating these products. Nearly half of all Planted products are now served in restaurants, cafeterias, and takeout establishments—which amounts to an estimated 20 million servings in 2025 alone.

Why beef is particularly relevant

One of the biggest opportunities for reducing diet-related emissions lies in replacing beef. Our new planted.steak generates 97% fewer CO₂ emissions and requires 92% less fresh water than conventional beef.

Although planted.steak accounts for only a small portion of our sales volume, it is responsible for more than half of the emissions avoided through our products, making it one of our most impactful innovations.

Sustainability goes beyond the product

Creating better proteins means thinking beyond the product itself.

By 2025, we will have further improved our value chain: with 100% renewable electricity in Kemptthal, a “train-first” travel policy, nearly 100% cardboard recycling, PET trays made from recycled material in our Swiss retail stores, exclusively non-GMO raw materials from Europe, and a reduction in production waste of more than 90%.

Sustainability is not a single initiative. It is the sum of thousands of decisions made every day.

Looking Ahead

We are proud of what we have achieved, but we are only just getting started.

Our goal remains the same: cleaner ingredients, more local sourcing, and even more sustainable production on a large scale.

The future of food isn't about sacrifice. It's about products that are better in every way—better in taste, better for your health, and better for our planet.
