Planted Publishes First Sustainability Report

3 minutes reading time

Kemptthal, April 12, 2022 – Just three years after its foundation, the Swiss food tech start-up Planted, known for its meat alternatives, published its first sustainability report today. The report contains detailed information about the company's successes, progress and plans in the area of sustainability from 2021. Planted is the fastest growing European start-up in the field of alternative proteins.

In 2019, Planted realized that its chicken meat alternative would turn the way meat is perceived upside down. Started as a start-up that initially sold its products from a laboratory at ETH Zurich, the founders quickly understood that many people love the taste of meat, but not at any cost. Consumers are increasingly paying attention to taste, naturalness, environmental compatibility and health when eating. Thanks to the development of products with a perfect bite and high protein content, which contain only natural ingredients, it has never been easier to replace meat with a plant-based alternative. Planted has set itself the goal of offering products that are better than animal meat and that are produced without the negative environmental impacts associated with animal husbandry.

Planted's 2021 Sustainability Report is the company's first attempt to document and communicate its sustainable journey - from its beginnings to what it has achieved so far and where the founders' vision is still to lead. Planted is an innovation-driven company that uses scientific progress to rapidly develop biostructured products, because the company is convinced that these will beat animal meat in terms of taste, sustainability, health, efficiency and price in the future. For this reason, Planted considers all these aspects as guiding principles on the path to greater sustainability - because no sustainable change in the food system can take place without taking these into account.

The 2021 Sustainability Report shows Planted's activities in the following areas, among others: packaging solutions, circular economy of resources and operational measures to reduce the overall ecological footprint. Planted focuses on improving resource efficiency and better understanding the footprint of its products. With the in-depth analysis of four different products, the company has already taken a decisive step towards measuring and monitoring the impact. Planted's product portfolio has enormous savings potential compared to animal products: 74 to 85 percent fewer CO2 equivalents are generated and up to 63 percent of water is saved.

Planted wants to get even better and has set measures to measure and manage its impact on the environment. This includes reducing plastic consumption, investing in the circular economy, switching to 100 percent renewable energy sources, improving responsible sourcing management, and reaching more people with Planted products.

Politics also plays an important role in creating the right framework for the transition to a sustainable food system to become a reality. Planted is working with industry partners to advance the issue of sustainable alternative protein sources on the political agenda and is one of the founding partners of the SPA | SwissProtein Association
