Zurich, Switzerland, 17th June 2025 - Planted, the Swiss FoodTech pioneer for plant-based meat made from only clean ingredients, is celebrating the opening of its new production facility in Memmingen, Bavaria. Using state-of-the-art fermentation technology, Planted sets new standards in sustainable protein production and brings further innovations to the market. The planted.steak celebrates national retail listings across Europe.

The demand for environmentally friendly food continues to grow - the revolutionary planted.steak in particular has been exciting consumers and restaurateurs across Europe over the past year. In order to meet this increasing demand, Planted announced plans for a further production facility in southern Germany in autumn 2024. Planted is now celebrating its opening and significantly expanding its production capacities. The new plant in Memmingen is Europe's most modern production facility for biostructured proteins and will make it possible to produce over 20 tonnes per day in the mid-term. This quantity corresponds to the current capacity of the site in Kemptthal, Switzerland - Planted is thus doubling its overall production capacity. The company is convinced that alternative proteins will surpass animal meat in terms of flavour, sustainability, health, productivity and price in the future.

Why Planted is investing in southern Germany

Planted will produce in Memmingen mainly for Germany and other EU markets including the UK. Lukas Böni, co-founder and member of the management board of Planted, explains: ‘With an export share of 75% and Germany as our biggest export country, expansion into our largest EU market was the obvious choice. The new proximity to key target markets, combined with a state-of-the-art production facility, allows for more sustainable and efficient logistics and production, helping Planted meet growing demand and stay closer to our international customers. The Kemptthal site remains a central pillar of our production and is particularly important for the Swiss market. However, we have reached the limits of our capacity here.’

Around 50 technical and operational jobs will be created in the longer term at the Memmingen site, the former site of the Memmingen brewery. Lukas Böni explains the choice of Memmingen further: ‘We benefit from qualified specialists and a long tradition of food production in the region as well as the advanced infrastructure in combination with very good transport links directly to the A7 motorway. We are also strengthened by an extensive network of partners who develop and distribute innovative and sustainable technologies. In addition, the proximity to our headquarters in Kemptthal brings major advantages in terms of technology transfer, which is essential for our innovative fermentation technology.’

Sustainability as a central element

Sustainability plays a key role in the new production facility of the B-Corp certified company. Together with the local Alois Müller Group, an expert in sustainable energy concepts, the plant is being designed to be environmentally friendly and energy-efficient, so that it can work towards CO2 neutrality. Planted relies on groundwater cooling and the heat supply is provided by a sustainable energy system.

‘With the opening of our new production facility, we are taking another milestone towards more sustainable and scalable protein production. Our biotechnological expertise enables us to bring new innovative products to market faster and more efficiently - and even closer to our customers in the retail and gastronomy sectors,’ explains Judith Wemmer, co-founder of Planted and operational lead for both of the company’s production sites.

Better proteins: Planteds' Whole-Muscle-Plattform

Planted produces a complete meat muscle, establishing a new benchmark in the development of premium meat cuts. The muscle grows through proprietary fermentation processes and can be further processed into a variety of meat cuts.

The planted.steak in particular, which was launched in 2024 and is based on this innovative technology, has triggered strong demand. The focus of the new production facility in Memmingen is therefore on scaling and further developing this product group and the advanced technology behind it. The planted.steak impressively demonstrates the potential of alternative proteins - in terms of flavour, health benefits and sustainability. More and more retailers in Europe are focusing on this innovative product: in the past few weeks alone, further significant national listings have been made at REWE and Kaufland in Germany, Tesco in the UK, Carrefour in France, Albert Heijn in Holland and Migros in Switzerland.

The production of a planted.steak causes 97% less CO2 emissions and requires 81% less water compared to conventional beef. At the same time, Planted remains true to its philosophy: the product is made exclusively from clean ingredients and is rich in protein, fibre, vitamin B12 and iron.

To coincide with the BBQ season, Planted has expanded its range with the planted.steak Paprika, which is based on the same innovative fermentation technology. In addition, numerous new products in the steak product group are already in development and are set to hit the market this year.

TV campaign in Germany, Austria and Switzerland

In addition to expanding production, Planted is also focusing on increasing its media presence. Through a strategic media partnership with SevenVentures, the investment arm of ProSiebenSat.1, for Germany and Austria, the first TV commercials focusing on the upcoming barbecue season can be seen on ProSiebenSat.1 channels and the streaming platform Joyn since April 21, 2025. Independently of this, the TV commercial can also be seen on Swiss channels such as ProSieben Schweiz and SRF: The focus is on the wrestling king of 2019, Christian Stucki - a self-confessed meat lover and new Planted Ambassador.
