Planted thanks the Federal Court and adjusts product names in Switzerland

2 minutes reading time

On May 2, 2025, the Swiss Federal Supreme Court ruled on how similar Planted's products are are to culinary original  – for usclear clear compliment. At the same time, the ruling reminds us that terms such as "chicken" or "duck" have historically been used for products of animal origin — and thus for a system that Planted has deliberately left behind behind. Planted stands for structured proteins from plants. We will implement the corresponding changes to the name by the end of March 2026 at the latest.

As these terms may no longer be used in future, Planted is changing its product names in Switzerland. Nothing else will change.

"The recipe, ingredients, texture, and taste remain exactly the same—we're just changing the names," says Judith Wemmer, co-founder of Planted. "Our products will continue to be served in the same way as before: fried, grilled, in salads, or in sandwiches."

The change only affects the Swiss market. At the same time, the EU recently decided to regulate the use of certain animal-related terms for plant-based products more strictly—another sign of how politicized the debate surrounding plant-based alternatives has become. However, we believe that banning familiar terms from everyday food labeling does little to help consumers.

Overview of the new designations in Swiss retail:

More than just a name.

When a court decides how close a plant-based product is to the original, it shows one thing above all else: the category has arrived.

Planted will continue to invest in research, fermentation, and product development - not to defend concepts, but to make products even better. Protein-rich, nutrient-rich, and free of negative externalities.

Planted thus remains true to its strategic focus: making plant-based proteins even more accessible, tasty, and sustainable.
